In today’s economic climate, it can be challenging to recognize all of the benefits of an undergraduate degree, particularly one in English. This study examines a history of the English major in the context of the liberal arts to better understand its advantages; a critique of English departments to discover whether and how they provide the best experience for students; and a proposal detailing how English majors can use their skills to secure meaningful work in the real world. My analysis will map both traditional and alternative career paths for undergraduates studying English. Finally, I assess less conventional and complementary paths to professional life for students whose interests, skills, and passion led them to English.
